PGA Tour: Reitan wins maiden title at Truist Championship

Norway’s Kristoffer Reitan won his maiden title on the PGA Tour as he captured the Truist Championship by two strokes over Rickie Fowler and Nicolai Hojgaard following a closing round of 2-under 70 at Quail Hollow Club.

Reitan benefitted from a difficult day for 54-hole leader Alex Fitzpatrick who bogeyed the 2nd before double-bogeying the 3rd en route to a 2-over 73. 

After a birdie at the 4th, Reitan gave shots back at the 5th and 6th but dug deep to birdie the par-5 7th. A string of pars followed and through 13 holes, Reitan was a shot behind Fowler who’d shot 5-under 30 on the front-nine.

A missed birdie from 6-feet by Fowler at 16 opened the door for Reitan, Fitzpatrick and Fowler. It was Reitan who crossed the threshold though with a birdie at 14 before a two-putt birdie at the next.

He parred in and, in so doing, added a PGA Tour Signature Event  title to the two DP World Tour titles on his CV.  

PGA Tour: Snedeker wins Myrtle Beach Classic

Brandt Snedeker won the 10th title of his PGA Tour career as he emerged a one-stroke victor over Mark Hubbard in the Myrtle Beach Classic at Dunes Golf Club.

Having shot rounds of 4-under 67 either side of a 68 in round two, the Presidents Cup captain found himself three adrift of Hubbard heading into the final round.

Birdies at the 2nd and 4th gave Snedeker early momentum in the final round. A run of pars followed before the turn but with Hubbard playing his opening-nine in even-par, Snedeker was making up ground.

Four birdies in a six-hole stretch from the 12th by Snedeker confirmed his title credentials. 

Hubbard collected birdies at the 12th, 13th and 15th but gave a shot back at the 16th.

Playing two groups ahead, Snedeker found some tree trouble off the 18th tee and was forced to pitch out. Unable to save par, his bogey set the clubhouse target at 18-under.

Lo and behold, Hubbard found the trees of 18-tee as well. Eventually left with an 18-footer for par, Hubbard’s ball stayed above ground and he was denied a shot at a playoff with Snedeker. 

LPGA Tour: Thitikul wins Mizuho Americas Open

Jeeno Thitikul turned a two-stroke 54-hole lead into a four-stroke win at the Mizuho Americas Cup after a final round of 3-under 69 at Mountain Ridge Country Club.

The Thai player made a strong start to the week with rounds of 67, 69 and 70. Ruoning Yin threw her hat into the ring on Sunday though as she carded four birdies in a row from the 5th in a 5-under 31 on the opening nine.

Thitikul birdied the 2nd and 3rd holes. She may have bogeyed the 13th but Yin’s inability to find any more red numbers for the remainder of the day afforded Thitikul a bit of breathing room.

Thitikul birdied both the 16th and 18th to cap off a fantastic performance.

DP World Tour: Premlall earns scintillating 14-stroke win in Spain

Yurav Premlall shot two weekend rounds of 9-under 63 to complete a scintillating 14-stroke victory in the Catalunya Championship at Real Club de Golf El Prat.

Premlall began the week with a somewhat sedate 2-under 70 before igniting his campaign with an 8-under 64 which vaulted him up into 3rd-place on the leaderboard.

The 22-year-old was in a class of his own on the weekend. He collected ten birdies and dropped just one shot in a Saturday round which not only broke the course record but gave him a commanding 5-stroke lead.

Undaunted by the pressure awaiting him in the final round, Premlall birdied four of his first five holes before adding birdies at the 8th and 9th.

In a performance which belied his age, Premlall continued his march to victory with birdies at 12 and 13. A bogey at 14 was a minor blip before he put the finishing touches on a jaw-dropping showing with birdies at the final two holes.

Compatriot Shaun Norris, nearly twice his age at 43-years-old, finished runner-up after a closing 68 saw him finish on 14-under par. 

LIV Golf Tour: Herbert wins maiden title in Virginia

Lucas Herbert won LIV Golf Virginia by four strokes from Sergio Garcia after a final round 3-under 69.

The Australian set the tone for a triumphant week with an opening round of 8-under 64 before going a shot better in round 2. After the blistering early pace he set, a third round of 4-under 68 meant he held a three-stroke leading going into the final day.

Spaniard Garcia reduced the deficit to one after reeling off three birdies in a row from the 8th in the final round. Needing to regroup after a 9th hole double-bogey, Herbert birdied the 11th and 12th holes before offsetting bogeys at 14 and 16 with birdies at 15 and 17.

Garcia was unable to sustain his early round momentum, dropping two shots over his final eight holes and picking up just one birdie in that stretch which afforded Herbert significant breathing room in the end.

Sunshine Tour: Van Der Merwe earns 4-stroke triumph in Zimbabwe

Altin Van der Merwe cruised to victory in the Zim Open at Royal Harare Golf Club, closing with a 4-under 68 to emerge a four-stroke victor over Australia’s Austin Bautista.

Van der Merwe made a strong start to the week with rounds of 67 and 68. A Saturday 64 highlighted by an eagle-3 on each nine and five birdies helped him to a four-shot advantage over Bautista and Kyle Barker through 54 holes.

Van Der Merwe book-ended his front-nine with birdies on the final day while two further red numbers maintained his stranglehold on proceedings.

Birdies at 14 and 16 came either side of a double-bogey 5 but the resultant even-par inward-half had no bearing on the final result with Baustista carding a 68 of his own and Barker a 70.

Aside from Van Der Merwe’s impressive display, rising amateur star Andries Van Der Vyver gave a brilliant account of himself as he shot rounds of 68-67-73-69 to finish in a tie for 7th having earned entry into the event by virtue of his win in the Junior Zim Open.

HotelPlanner Tour: Wood earns emotional victory in Italy

England’s Chris Wood has won three DP World Tour titles and played in the Ryder Cup. Having battled depression in recent times which saw him step away from golf periodically, Wood battled back to claim an emotional one-stroke win in the Italian Challenge at Golf Nazionale.

A second round of 8-under 64, sandwiched between rounds of 68 ensured that Wood held a share of the 54-hole lead with compatriot Barclay Brown on 16-under par.

The experienced Wood outplayed Brown, 13 years his junior, in the final round. Wood collected four front-nine birdies before further red numbers at the 15th and 18th. Wood’s closing birdie and the 66 for which he signed was key to holding off runner-up Tomas Gouveia who birdied four of his last five holes in a round of 66.

Brown finished alone in 3rd-place after a 68.

PGA Tour Champions: Boo breaks into winner’s circle

Boo Weekley won the first title of his PGA Tour Champions career as he won the Insperity Invitational by three shots over Ernie Els.

The three-time PGA Tour winner found himself a shot to the good after opening with back-to-back rounds of 6-under 66.

There was little to separate Weekley and Els for much of the day. The pivotal moment came at the 17th. Trailing by one, Els’ approach found the water and resulted in a double-bogey. Weekley meanwhile made birdie to forge four ahead.

To Els’ credit, he managed to birdie the last but with Weekley making par, he ultimately came up short.

1. Yurav Premlall’s 14-stroke win at the Catalunya Championship eclipsed Tiger Woods’ record for widest margin of victory by a maiden DP World Tour winner, breaking Woods’ 12-stroke record at the 1997 Masters.
