PGA Tour: Different Tour, same result for McCarty

After a Three-Win Korn Ferry Tour season catapulted him to the PGA Tour, Matt McCarty took all of two starts to claim a maiden PGA Tour title by three shots over Stephan Jaeger in the Black Desert Championship.

Holding a 2-shot 54-hole advantage may have been a daunting prospect but the American showed no nerves to speak of. After a bogey-free 2-under front-9, McCarty responded to a bogey-5 at 12 by eagling the par-4 14th. After making birdie at the 16th, he relinquished the shot at the 17th.

No matter, he capped a phenomenal Sunday showing and week in Utah with a birdie-4 to beat Jaeger by one on the day and three on the week. 

LPGA Tour: Yin wins by six in Shanghai

Weekend rounds of 63 and 64 propelled Ruoning Yin to a six-shot victory in the Buick LPGA Shangai tournament.

Yin’s 9-under third round saw her sit just a shot adrift of Mao Saigo heading into Sunday play.

Their fourth rounds were contrasting: Saigo managed just two birdies all day, offsetting a dropped shot at the 7th with birdies at 8 and 17 to card a 71.

Yin on the other hand birdied two of her first five holes in a front-9 34. The Chinese player ensured it was a happy homecoming as she reeled off six back-9 birdies including the 17th and 18th, leaving Saigo and Sei Young Kim (68) trailing in her wake.

DP World Tour: Bradbury wins Open De France

Dan Bradbury converted a final round of five-under 66 into a one-shot victory over a quartet of players in the Open De France, the second victory of the Englishman’s DP World Tour career.

Despite an opening hole birdie, Bradbury made the turn in one-under after eight consecutive pars. The inward-half was much more productive with a second red number at the 10th preceding three birdies in a row from the 14th.

Two closing pars proved enough to get Bradbury over the line and eclipse Thorbjorn Olesen (69), Sam Bairstow (69), Yannik Paul (67) and Jeff Winther (64) who all finished on 15-under for the tournament.

54-hole leader Jesper Svensson endured a difficult Sunday as a final round 5-over 76 relegated him to a share of 27th.

Sunshine Tour: Broomhead sweeps to Wild Coast victory

Jonathan Broomhead defeated Luke Brown on the third extra hole to win the Vodacom Origins of Golf Wild Coast for his second Sunshine Tour title.

The pair ended regulation tied on 11-under with Broomhead firing a superb 7-under 63 which included 9 birdies. Brown shot a second successive 66 to earn his playoff berth. Pieter Moolman meanwhile, who lead by three overnight, crashed to a final round 74, finishing in a tie for 12th.

Broomhead and Brown traded pars on the first two playoff holes before the Durbanite broke the deadlock with an eagle-3 at the par-5 3rd to eclipse Brown’s birdie.

Challenge Tour: Brown beats Go in Hainan Open playoff

Hamish Brown birdied the first hole of a sudden-death playoff against Lloyd Go to win the Hainan Open, the third Challenge Tour victory of his career.

Brown and Go trailed 54-hole leader Oliver Lindell heading into the final round. With Lindell carding a Sunday 2-under 70, Brown surged to the top of the leaderboard with a closing 66 that was punctuated with a birdie on the 18th.

Go matched Brown’s 19-under tournament total with a 67 that consisted of an eagle, four birdies and one bogey.

Filipino Go was unable to match Brown’s birdie in the playoff, carding a par-5 for a runner-up which represented the best finish of his 2024 season. 

PGA Tour Champions: Bogey beneficiary Kelly wins SAS Championship

After an 18th hole bogey in an otherwise great final round of five-under 67 had the potential to cost Jerry Kelly a 12th PGA Tour Champions Tour title, the American was handed a reprieve and a one-shot victory when Padraig Harrington suffered the same final hole fate.

Harrington had led the tournament through two rounds on 11-under par but ultimately came to rue not just the closing bogey but the fact that he made another at the 9th which undermined birdies at the 5th, 12th and 17th.

Playing one group ahead of Harrington, Kelly made half the number of bogeys and, crucially, twice the number of red numbers which made all the difference as he snapped a title drought dating back to 2022.

  1. Canadian Adam Svensson (Black Desert Champs) and Sweden’s Jesper Svensson (Open de France) led their respective events after the first round. Same Surname. Same leaderboard position. Different home countries. What are the odds?
  2. 73-year-old Dick Mast eclipsed his age by 7 to pre-qualify for the SAS Championship.
  3. In the last 10 years on the PGA Tour, Henrik Norlander, Jim Furyk and Tyler Duncan are the only players to hit every fairway and green in multiple rounds during a given PGA Tour season (Credit: Justin Ray Golf).
  4. Matt McCarty is the first player since Jason Gore in 2005 to win three Korn Ferry Tour titles and a PGA Tour event in the same calendar year.
