An impressive singles session fightback saw Eastern Province earn a 6-6 draw with Western Province on day 4 of the SA Premier IPT, all but ending WP’s hopes of defending their title at Silver Lakes Golf Club.
Western Province tweaked their foursomes line-up with Andrew Georgiou partnering Cole Cruickshank and Chris Strydom teeing it up with Mitch Phigeland. It proved an inspired move from manager Werner Theart with the former pair earning a 3&2 victory and the latter a 4&3 scalp in the anchor game. Andries van der Vyver and Henru Walters combined for a 2&1 win with Shaun Le Roux and Dan Copeman falling to a surprising 5&4 defeat.
Wins were hard to come by for WP in the afternoon. Copeman continued his unbeaten singles run with a 2-Up win in the anchor match while Cruickshank earned a 1-Up win at the top of the order. The only other WP win belonged to skipper Georgiou who managed a 4&2 win. The remaining 5 matches went EP’s way with Shaun Viljoen winning the 18th to beat Phigeland 1-Up.
Elsewhere in the A-section, Central Gauteng overturned a 1-3 deficit after the foursomes against Gauteng North as they won 5.5 singles points and the derby clash 6.5-5.5.
North-West ensured the title race will go down to the final day’s play after a 7.5-4.5 win against Southern Cape has them in 2nd on the log just 2 Game-points behind Central.
At the other end of the table, EP are bottom with one match point, a Match point behind Southern Cape.
