Riaan Lewis made full use of his home-course advantage en route to a five-stroke victory in the Western Province Senior Masters at King David Mowbray Golf Club on Monday.
Low scoring was the order of the day in round one with no fewer than 14 players breaking par. Nobody went lower than Lewis though who collected seven birdies and dropped just two shots in a round of five-under 67. Fellow KDM member Herman September carded a four-under 68 while WP’s top-ranked senior, Cameron Johnston, as well Greg Woodbridge and Tony Louw occupied a group of seven players a further shot adrift.
None of the chasing pack managed to engineer a final round charge with only three of the eventual top-10 breaking par in round two. That Lewis was one of them, signing for a two-under 70 highlighted by birdies at 17 and 18 meant he finished the event with the trophy in hand plus bragging rights over his fellow Western Province Senior IPT teammates.
Duane Fisher, Cameron Johnston and Weyers Janse van Rensbuurg shared second on two-under par while Ulrich Schulte, Jonathan Bernard and Greg Woodbridge shared 5th-place.
