US Open : Clark goes wire-to-wire for 2nd US Open title

Wyndham Clark withstood the pressure of blustery conditions and a charging Sam Burns to shoot a final round 3-over 73 and win his second US Open title by a shot at a blustery Shinnecock Hills.
|
The American made a flying start start to the week with a 6-under 64 before grinding out rounds of 69 and 70 which put him six shots to the good over Scottie Scheffler and Sahith Theegala.
|
The final round was anything but a foregone conclusion. Groups ahead of Clark, Burns collected four birdies in his first eight holes to move to 4-under par for the tournament.
|
Clark by contrast dropped three shots over his opening seven holes. Burns' momentum was halted by a bogey at nine while Clark picked up a first red number of the day at the 10th to generate a bit of positive momentum for the first time in the round.
|
Burns was only able to add a single birdie to his tally on the back-nie at the par-5 16th to offset a drop at the previous hole in a round of 67.
|
Clark too only picked up one back-nine birdie, also at 16 while he dropped shots at the 13th and 17th.
|
|
A shot to the good playing the 72nd hole, he produced a superb two-putt par from 52-feet to complete a thrilling wire-to-wire victory.

LPGA Tour: Yamashita wins Meijer Classic
|
|
|
|
Miyu Yamashita shot a final round 8-under 64 before defeating Lottie Woad with a birdie at the first playoff hole to win the Meijer Classic at Blythefield Country Club.
|
Yamashita was five shots adrift of 36 and 54-hole leader Jing Yan. Five birdies in her first seven holes catapulted her into the title conversation. The birdie putts kept dropping on the back-nine as Yamashita collected red numbers at the 10th, 11th and 13th. A bogey at 15 was countered by a clutch birdie at the par-5 18th.

After making the turn in 3-under 33, Woad produced birdies at the 14th and 17th though a bogey at the last dropped her back into the playoff with Yamashita.

The Japanese player made short shrift of the playoff, making birdie at the 18th to Woad's par thus winning the third title of her LPGA Tour career.

Sunshine Tour: Simpson stages comeback win in Zambia

A final round 6-under 66 saw Sam Simpson overturn a four shot deficit and produce a one-shot win in the KCM Challenge at Nchanga Golf Club.
|
Simpson trailed 54-hole leader Haydn Porteous who opened his week with rounds of 2-under 70, 66 and 64 to edge a shot clear of Oliver Goldhill.
|
It was a rollercoaster Sunday for Porteous who carded six birdies which were undermined by a double-bogey and three bogeys in a round of 71.
|
This opened the door for Simpson who made the turn in 2-under 34. Combatting a drop at the 10th, he collected birdies at the 12th and 15th. An astonishing eagle-3/birdie-3 finish at the 17th and 18th sealed the deal.

Neither Goldhill (70) nor Porteous were able to draw level with Simpson and shared 2nd alongside Piete Moolman (64) and Simon du Plooy (65).

John Catlin birdied the 7th extra hole to defeat Kristian Johannessen and win the English Open at Vale Golf Club.
|
American Catlin had led the Norwegian by a shot through three rounds on 13-under par. Both players played brilliantly on the final day: Catlin collecting five birdies in a 5-under 67 while Johannessen made six birdies in a 66.
|
In light of their appetite for birdies during regulation, it was surprising that the pair traded par after par, for the first six holes of sudden-death before Catlin landed the decisive birdie on their second trip down the par-4 9th in the playoff.

Clovelly Open: Marais wins on home track
|
|
|
Evan Marais engineered a victory on his home course, firing rounds of 67 and 70 to win the Clovelly Open by a shot from Nicholas Thompson.
|
Beginning on the 11th, Marais enjoyed a superb morning round highlighted by a run of four birdies in a row from the 1st while his lone bogey came at the 18th.
|
Despite the 67, he found himself two shots behind Strand’s Gideon Van der Vyver heading into the afternoon round.
|
Marais made two birdies in his first four holes and picked up further shots at the 18th, 3rd and 7th holes. These were crucial to offsetting the a double-bogey at the 1st and a drop at the 9th, enabling Marais to eclipse Thompson who carded a pair of 69s.
|
|
Van Der Vyver carded a 74 to finish in a share of 3rd with Cole Cruickshank who had 73 and 66.
|
