DP World Tour: Lowry earns mammoth 11-shot Irish Open triumph

A second round 8-under 62 propelled home hope Shane Lowry into a three-shot lead through 36 holes of the Irish Open. A Sunday 63 around Trump International Golf Links in Doonbeg confirmed a second Irish Open win for Lowry, the latest by a whopping 11-shots.

17 years on from his stunning victory as an amateur in 2009, Lowry again had the galleries marvelling at his level of play. The Friday round featured two stretches of three birdies in a row on the front-nine.
|
He built on his 36-hole advantage with a 65 which put him up by four shots on Jacob Olesen with a round to play.
|
Sunday was another scoring masterclass from the former Open champion. Four birdies on his opening-nine against just one bogey meant that, with nine holes to play, the event was something of a foregone conclusion.
|
Yet the birdies continued flying for the Irishman. He book-ended the back-nine with birdies while adding two more at the 14th and 15th for good measure.
|
|
In a distant 2nd-place were Patrick Reed and Joaquinn Niemann after rounds of 64 and 67 respectively.

Solheim Cup: Europe earn Cup back on home soil with 15-13 triumph over USA

A phenomenal Sunday Singles display by Europe in which they won 7 of the 12 points on offer, saw the hosts win back the Solheim Cup by a 15-13 margin over the USA at Bernardus Golf Club in The Netherlands.
|
There was no separating the two sides through the first two days' play. A clutch putt by Carlota Ciganda in the final betterball match helped her and Julia Ramirez salvage a half point against Nelly Korda and Lauren Coughlin, ensuring a 2-2 session after the morning foursomes ended the same way.
|
The foursomes on Saturday were one-sided with the hosts earning a 3-1 session win highlighted by Maja Stark and Linn Grant's defeat of Allisen Corpuz and Korda.
|
The Americans hit back with a 3-1 victory of their own in the afternoon better-ball which featured two 1-Up wins which complemented a 3&2 triumph.
|
With the stage set for a thrilling finale, it was the Europeans who made the faster start on Sunday. England's Charley Hull set a fine tone with a 3&2 dismantling of Megan Khang in the top match. It proved a popular margin of victory with Nastasia Nadaud and Ramirez defeating Andrea Lee and Yealimi Noh by the same margin to keep the European tally ticking.

There were a smattering of spirited performances by the USA. Alison Lee in particular recovered superbly from a 4-hole deficit through 11 agains Esther Henseleit by winning three in a row from the 12th. Wins at the 16th and 17th confirmed her remarkable 1-Up triumph. Nelly Korda meanwhile was a 4&2 winner over Mimi Rhodes.

The scoreboard though had mostly a blue hue to it in, an illustration of the Europeans stranglehold on proceedings. Lottie Woad converted a 4-up advantage over Auston Kim into an eventual 2&1 triumph while Nanna Madsen beat Corpuz by the same margin.

It was fitting that the biggest European victory on the day went to Ciganda, a pillar of strength through the years for the Europeans who thumped Jennifer Kupcho 4&2.

There were American wins for Lauren Coughlin (2&1 v Leona Maguire), Lindy Duncan (3&1 v Stark)and Rose Zhang (2-Up v Celine Boutier). Their wins though were mere consolations in the grand scheme of things

Sunshine Tour: Simpson sweeps to Sunbet Challenge win

Sam Simpson won a fourth Sunshine Tour title in 15 months when he turned a two-shot deficit into a one-shot triumph in the Sunbet Challenge at Mount Edgecombe's The Woods.
|
Graham Van Der Merwe set the 36-hole pace on 10under par after following a terrific 7-under 63 with a 67.
|
Simpson gathered early momentum in the final round with birdies at his opening two holes before adding a third red number to his card at the 8th. The back-nine was slightly slower with birdies arriving at the 10th and 16th in an eventual 5-under 65.
|
Three-under for the day and tied with Simpson standing on the 18th tee, Van Der Merwe knew a birdie at the 417-yard par-4 closing hole would see him over the line.
|
|
Instead his title aspirations were dashed by a bogey which not only cost him victory but also meant he shared 2nd with both Pieter Moolman and Rowan Lester.

Korn Ferry Tour: Ortiz birdie blitz wins Simmons Bank Open

A back-nine of 5-under 30 by Alvaro Ortiz in a closing round of 7-under 63 helped him to a four-stroke win over Sandy Scott in the Simmons Bank Open at Vanderbilt Legends Club.
|
The pair started the day in a share of the lead on 19-under par. Mexican Ortiz edged ahead at the turn having turned in 2-under 33 to Scott's 34.
|
On the back-nine he widened the gap more and more. After he birdied 10 and 11, Scott responded with two of his own at the 12th and 13th to remain within striking distance.
|
|
The difference was that 13 would be Scott's final birdie of the day while Ortiz kept rolling. Birdies at 14 and 15 grew the advantage to three before Ortiz put the event beyond all doubt with a final birdie at the par-4 17th for his second Korn Ferry Tour title of the year.

HotelPlanner Tour: clutch Kjettrup wins English Trophy

Fredrik Kjettrup birdied his final two holes in a 5-under 67 which saw him pip Ronan Kleu by a shot in the English Trophy at The Caversham.
|
Dane Kjettrup held a one-shot lead heading into the final round on 16-under. Kleu though charged up the leaderboard with a front-nine 6-under 30 that included an eagle-birdie-eagle sequence. Three additional birdies on the second-nine saw him card a superb 63 and set the clubhouse target at 20-under.
|
After a sluggish even-par front-nine, Kjettrup's round roared to life with birdies at 10,12 and another at 14. A bogey two holes later didn't set him back for long, a birdie-2 at 17 helping him draw level with Kleu once more.
|
|
The 26-year-old ensured there would be no need for extra holes when he produced a birdie-3 at 18 and with it a maiden HotelPlanner Tour title.

PGA Tour Champions: Johnson pips Crane with last hole birdie

Zach Johnson birdied his final two holes to eclipse fellow PGA Tour Champions rookie Ben Crane by a shot in the Sanford International at Minnehaha Country Club.
|
Johnson shared the lead with the unherallded Jay Jurecic on 7-under. But while Jurecic, making just his fourth career start, had his challenge stall with a 1-over 71, Johnson maintained his momentum with three birdies in his opening 12 holes.
|
Crane meanwhile made four birdies in his first 12 holes against two bogeys. He remained well in the title conversation with birdies at the 15th and 16th.
|
A late two shot swing saw Crane fall one behind after he bogeyed the 17th and playing partner Johnson made birdie.
|
|
The pair both birdied the 18th to confirm Johnson's fifth title of the season.
