The Open Championship: Fantastic Mr. Fox wins at Royal Birkdale

Ryan Fox overcame a slow start to his Open Championship, withstood two terrible breaks down the stretch before making a 72nd hole birdie to earn a dramatic one-shot victory over Cameron Young at Royal Birkdale for his first Major crown.
|
The New Zealander opened with a 2-over 72 and a second round 68 to sit in 51st-place, a distant 8-strokes adrift of 36-hole leader Lucas Herbert.
|
Fox's third round was remarkable. The 39-year-old reeled off seven 3's in a row from the 2nd hole, carding 11 in all in an 8-under 62 featuring nine birdies and a bogey to climb to within 2-strokes of Sam Burns. Burns led on 10-under having combatted a round one 3-over 73 with a 62 and 65.

Burns' challenge flamed out in the final round. A lone birdie came at the 2nd before a run of three bogeys from the 4th meant he fell two shots short of the eventual winning mark.

Instead Young installed himself as the most viable threat to the title. Starting his round 2hr15min before the final group, the American birdied four of his first five holes and found himself 7-under for the day and 10-under for the Championship playing 18. A bogey at the last saw him post a clubhouse total of 9-under.

It was a mark that stood up exceptionally well. Fox though drew level with Young after birdies at the 13th and 14th. A wicked kick off the wooden face of a greenside bunker at the 241-yard par-3 14th forced Fox to play out sideways, doing well to salvage a bogey.

He steeled himself. A birdie at the 16th moved him back into a share of the lead. Another bad break in the bunker would befall him off the tee at the par-5 17th but Fox summoned his significant strength to advance the ball down the fairway before a birdie putt slid past the right-edge of the hole.

His 72nd hole was nothing short of perfection. A tee-shot which split the fairway set up an approach that left the 39-year-old with a putt for the claret jug.

With it's last breath, it found the bottom of the cup and Ryan Fox found himself on top of the world.

PGA Tour: Mazzoli wins maiden Tour title
|

|
|
Stefano Mazzoli shot a 6-under 66 to overturn a four-shot deficit and win the Corales Puntucana Championship at Puntucana Resort & Club.
|
Todd Clements had led through three rounds having opened wih a 65, 66 and 67. The Englishman cooled off on Sunday with a 71 after his challenge was thwarted by two bogeys and a double-bogey.
|
This opened the door for Mazzoli who made five birdies in a six hole stretch, a sequence that began on the 3rd and was interrupted by a bogey at the 5th.
|

He birdied three of his last six holes. The last of which was the 18th and helped him pip Clements and Gordon Sargent (67) by a shot.
